"Changing the World" Conference: 14-15 July
Updated 19 June 2007
CHANGING THE WORLD
Marxist educational conference organised by the International Socialist Orga
nisation

The Howard government looks to be facing defeat at the election later this year. There is a widespread desire to get the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, force real action to halt global warming and to fight for better workers’ rights and conditions. How can we mobilise social movements to help ensure Howard’s defeat? And what would the election of a Rudd Labor government mean? This conference will discuss these and other key issues facing social movements and the left, and the relevance of Marxist strategies and ideas to changing the world.

Sessions include:
Politics after Howard APEC and the federal election

Should we welcome a US defeat in Iraq? How Labor governs
Is Latin America heading towards socialism?
Global warming: collective versus individual solutions

Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July
Sydney Uni Village, Carillon Ave, Newtown

As APEC approaches, a look at when protest met global summit

Melbourne Rising: the S11 2000 protests

Exclusion zones protected by huge fences, hype about police preparation for protests, media scare campaigns about “protester violence”... The lead up to the protests when George Bush visits for the APEC summit in September resemble that for global summit meetings across the world. The most famous example so far in Australia was when 20,000 gathered at the S11 2000 protests against the World Economic Forum meeting in Melbourne. This film tells the story of the protest, which holds important lessons as APEC nears.
